I’m Back!

Hello!

It has been quite some time since I made a post on this site, and that’s for several reasons. I started this blog/site over a year ago while working as an editor for CBR. I wasn’t able to do as much TTRPG coverage there as I would have liked, so I wanted to have a place to do that on the side. Unfortunately, I underestimated how much time doing something “on the side” really takes and overestimated how much I wanted to do editorial work on my freetime after doing it all day long. I did a few reviews I’m proud of before properly burning out, but now I’ve quit my editor job and I’m ready to be back!

Going forward, I’m going to be a lot more loose about what I let myself publish on here. I’ll keep “official” reviews and interviews separate, but I’d also like to do a lot more blogging, design musing, and whatever else comes to mind. Here’s just a few things I think will be on the menu for the future of The Horsepond Mine.

  • A play report of Modiphius’s Five Parsecs From Home. I have been building and painting miniatures for over a year now, and I’d love to get into a campaign of this game. It would be a great excuse to build new sci-fi figures and/or paint up my pile of shame.
  • Thoughts on other kinds of media. Before I left CBR I half-heartedly embarked on a quest to read all 1000+ issues of Action Comics, it would be fun to post my findings on here. Other comics, TV shows, movies, etc, who knows!
  • Rewriting the Monster Manual, a concept I first heard about from the excellent I Cast Light blog. I’ve been reading old D&D adventures and books and I would love to take a crack at reimagining monsters in this way.
  • On that note, I have a big shelf of RPG books and modules I’d like to work through and put down thoughts on.
  • An interview project I’ve been kicking around for a while, I’d like to talk to as many people as I can and learn how people found their way to roleplaying games. I’d love to develop a sort of “people’s history” of the hobby.
  • A reflection on my failed attempted to do #Dungeon23. Secretly, I hope that my version of #dungeon24 is posting on here every day for the next year.
  • Game design/setting design. I’ve been working off and on on a sci-fi setting for a long time, it would be fun to get that out of the Google docs and into the world.

I’d also like to get back to doing some reviews. I don’t think I’m ever going to be fast enough to turn around reviews in a way that is particularly useful for promotion in the crowdfunding cycle. But I do love the process of reading a game and putting some words to paper about it. So if you reach out in search of promotion for your current crowdfunding project, I apologize, I’m probably not going to be very helpful. But if you like some of what I’ve written and want me to have a look over your game, please send me an email!
