The Astral Prison of the Nether Vulture (pt. 7)

Today’s another shorter post, but I’m working on some longer posts comping up soon. Today I found a way to link to another floor of this dungeon, which I might just jump to because the book I’m using to stock this dungeon, Dungeons & Dragons Monster & Treasure Assortment is gets a bit repetitive in level one. I rolled orcs on this one, and I’m wondering how I want to use them in this dungeon. Part of me wants to turn to Luke Gearing again and take the orcs from Volume 2 Monsters &, which are delightfully horrifying. But I also did some research on pre-Tolkien uses of the word, and came across this blog from Marcus Pitcaithly, who does a nice job summarizing some of the times the word has cropped up in literature. I’m particularly interested by William Blake’s Orc, I wonder if orcs in this instance will be some kind of denizen of the underworld, rebels against whatever gods allow the presence of the Nether Prison. I’m not here to fill in all the lore right now, but that’s where my head is at with the orcs.

Rolls

Room 46: 3 Warriors, 1 scroll of fireball in a stone container with a poison needle in the handle, in a secret room nearby.

Room 47: Empty

Room 48: Empty

Room 49: 5 Stirges, 700 SP in iron trunks guarded by a trapdoor opening

Room 50: 5 Orcs, 700 EP in metal urns guarded by contact poison and hidden in natural objects

My Take

Room 46: 3 armed warriors, come to retrieve their fallen wizard’s stashed contingency

Room 47: Empty

Room 48: Empty, a scattering of leaves

Room 49: A series of iron trunks arrayed haphazardly in a semicircle facing south. In the center of the semicircle is a hidden trapdoor, leading to Dungeon level 3. A hive of 5 stirges nests in the shaft.

Room 50: 5 children of the underworld. They have gathered 7 metal funeral urns, each with 100 EP. The coins are doused in their deadly venomous blood and the urns hidden inside clay pillars
